Hi everyone!
We're continuing to actively develop our game, and in this post, I want to share and show one of the aspects I’ve been working on lately. Its about..
..Textures!
Right now, we're building a level set in a nightclub controlled by a hostile faction. The club is located in an old abandoned mansion, and I want the atmosphere to capture the sense of decay—something that was once elegant and refined, now crumbling and lost. Initially, I picked a few placeholder colors just to get started... but then I realized—there’s something here worth exploring! The first placeholder textures were done by @HeavyBro,the one of the more grеatest guy ever, but I decided to experiment with decoration and lighting to shape a specific mood. Eventually, I discovered that the combination of red, green, and purple might create a surprisingly compelling vibe.
These concepts show early stages of the level design — many things are still subject to change.
Some of the base textures actually started to feel quite fitting once refined. I decided that the textures should emphasize the old, worn-down look of the building. I brought that out by adding deformation and grime to the patterns.
Most of the tiles use patterned designs, but to keep the background visually engaging, I made 4+ variations of each texture. On top of that, the patterned tiles are designed to complement each other with their colors and respond to light. In fact, when red light hits the green tiles with red accents, a glowing effect appears!
I kind of got carried away and made a ton of textures — thresholds, stairs, different patterns in several color combos, and a bunch of other stuff. Ended up with around 180 textures~
While working on the tile system, I realized I could go beyond 16x16 textures and start combining them with larger 32x32 ones. That turned out to create a very interesting visual effect, which I’ll keep building on in the future. On top of that, the patterned tiles are designed to complement each other with their colors and respond to light. Don’t mind this BIG CARPET. I was just having some fun…
As of now, the game already has over 200 unique textures—and that’s just the beginning. These materials will also be available to other creators in the level editor.Beyond this, I’m also working on decorations and characters—which we’ll talk about in future posts.
